Abstract

Eight crossbred cows (Ongole X Jersey X HF) in early stage of second lactation, yielding4.8 kg milk/d, were divided in two groups (4 in each group). They were fed on Gliricidia leaves (GIL) + urea treated paddy straw (UTPS) in 1:1 as sole feed (group 1) and GL+untreated paddy straw (UPS) in 1:1 ad lib, + concentrate mixture to meet production requirement (group 2). A digestion trie! was conducted during last week of the 60 day study. There were comparable DM1/100 kg body weight, nutrients digestibilities and milk yield and its composition. DM digestibility was significantly (P<0.05) higher in group 1. All the experimental animals met the DCP and TDN requirements. The cost of feeding per kg milk yield and FCM was significantly (P<0.01) lower in group 1. It was concluded that the ration containing GL and UTPS in 1sl ratio can economically sustain 5–6 litres of milk production in crossbred cows.
