A sensitive and comparatively less combursum method for the estimation of iodine In feed materials was standardised and the average recovery of the standard was 88.41±3.77%. The method is based on the principle that iodides have a catalytic effect on the reduction of eerie sulphate by arsenious acid in sulphuric acid solution, the graded progress of the reaction can be followed by the steady dtsapparance of the yellow colour of the eerie ions, which is measured in the spectrophotometer. Iodine content in various feed stuffs was: cereals viz. maize, wheat and barley, 0.115±0.037, 0.137±0.003 and 0.192±0.066; oil cakes viz., deoiled groundnut cake, mustard and mahua 0.263±0.135, 0.107±0.084 and 0.085 ±0.0124; wheat bran and rice bran (deoiled), 0.099±0.029 and 0.287±0.127; Green fodders viz. maize, jowar, bajra, mustard and subabul 0,327±0.110,0.306±0.109, 0.255±0.084, O.355±0.076 and 0.574±0.146 and straws viz. wheat straw and rice straw 0.293±0.078 and 0.309±0.155µg/g, respectively. The results showed wide variation In the content of iodine in each feed and fodder. Majority of the feed, ingredients viz. cereals, oilcake and brans contained low amounts of iodine while green fodders and straws had low to marginally adequate level of iodine as per the requirement for growth, reproduction and the production of the livestock.
