Rumen Metabolic Profile in Crossbred Calves Fed on Subabul Leaf Meal

Abstract

Three complete rations, comprising horsegram hay and dried subabul (Leucaena leucocephala) leafmeal (SLM) in the ratio of 75:0 (CR-1), 25:50 (CR-2) and 0:7S (CR-3) per 100 parts by weight replaced 0, 60 and 90 percent of CP of rations by SLM, and were made isonitrogeneous by adjusting the proportions of maize and groundnut cake. In a 3 x 3 latin square design on rumen flstulated crossbred calves, the rumen pH, rumen ammonia nitrogen (NH3-N), total volatile fatty acid (TVFA) production, TCA insoluble protein nitrogen and activities of rumen fluid enzymes viz. aspartate amino transferase (GOT), alanine amino transferase (GPT) and alknline phosphatase exhibited similar fermentation pattern in the three groups suggesting that SLM may be fed upto 75 per cent of the rations without any toxic symptom and deleterious effect on rumen fermentation.
