Effect of Application Method and Level of Nitrogen Fertilizer on Nitrate Content in Oat Fodder

Abstract

On application of 0, 80, 160 and 240 kg/ha nitrogen fertilizer in two and three splits, the mean concentration of nitrate-N in oat fodder was 360, 1280, 1840, 2430 (above toxic level) and 290, 990, 1320 and 1670 ppm, respectively, at 70 clays after sowing (DAS). At 50% flowering, these values reduced by 38.9, 60.2, 62.5, 61.7 and 31.0, 37.4, 41.4 and 50.9%, respectively, at each respective level of nitrogen fertilizer. When a single dose of 240kg nitrogen fertilizer/ha was applied two splits, the stem portion Was found to contain 2.5 times more nitrate-N as compared to leaves, at 90 DAS. However, when lower, middle and upper p$$ ons of the stem were analysed separately, these were found to cccumulate 3200, 2560 and 1280 ppm nitrate-N, respectively.
