Nutritional Evaluation of Locally Available Feedstuffs in Bangladesh

Abstract

Nine roughages (rice straw, Green maize, Green oat, Dhai grass, Napier grass, Sunhemp, Green matikalai. Green khesarikalai and Dhaincha browse) and nine concentrates (Wheat, Wheat bran. Rice polish. Molasses, Mustard oil cake. Til oil cake, Coconut oil cake. Soybean meal and Fish meal) were studied with respect to the chemical composition, organic matter digestibility (OMD), metabolizable energy (ME) and rumen degradable protein (RDP) content The OMD and ME content was predicted from the extent of fermentation in vitro incubation with rumen inoculum and RDP was evaluated based on in situ method. The roughages showed values of: CP 38 to 243, NFE 403 to 514, NDF 498 to 650, ADF 296 to 518 g/kg DM, OMD 42 to 72%, ME 6.5 to 10.3 MJ/kg DM and RDP 10.8 to 150 g/kg DM. The concentrates showed values of: CP 33 to 551, NFE 108 to 877, NDF 157 to 725, ADF 89 to 550 g/kg DM, OMD 42.9 to 84.7, ME 6.9 to 13.1 MJ/kg DM and RDP 28.7 to 269.3 g/kg DM. Among roughages, straw showed much lower of CP and RDP values with high NDF and ADF content. The findings will enable establishment of data bank based on ME and RDP contents of the feed stuffs for formulation of ration based on the concept of energy and rumen protein degradability.
