Abstract

Six silages viz. pure Leucaena leucocephala (T1), L. leucocephala+5% molasses (T2), L. leucocephala+5% maize grain (T3), L, leucocephala+sorghum fodder (1 : 1, T4), L. leucocephala+ wheat straw (3 ; 1, T6) and L. leucocephala+vtheat straw +maizc grain (70:25:5, T6) were prepared in laboratory silos. The silos were opened on days 40 and 60. The reduction in mimosine content was significant (P<0.01) on day 40 of ensiling in all the treatments, which ranged from 30.55 (T6) to 56.62 percent (T1). Almost a similar trend was observed after 60 days of ensiling. Crude protein decreased significantly (P<0.01); between periods and treatments. The difference in CF and NFE contents were significant (P<0.01) among the treatments but were non-significant due to periods. The variations in volatile fatty acids except butyric acid were non-significant due to treatments and periods.
