Survey of Common Feedstuffs for Aflatoxins

Abstract

Random samples of oil seed meals, grains, grain byproducts and compound feed mixtures were collected from different sources. Out of 14 samples of groundnut cake collected before rainy season, 8 samples were positive for the presence of anatoxin B1 (range 0.12 to 0.80 pptn). Out of 19 samples of groundnut cake collected during and after rainy season, 17 samples were positive for aflatoxin B1 in the range of 0.12 to 1.00 ppm. Out of 4 samples collected each of cattle feed, poultry mash and pigmasb, 3 samples in each category indicated presence of aflatoxin B1. Two samples out of four linseed meal and 2 out of 10 maize samples indicated the presence of aflatoxin, but none of the wheat bran or fishmeal samples revealed any trace of anatoxin. One berseem hay sample was also negative. Out of 68 samples assayed, 38 were positive for aflatoxin B1 and 9 for G1. The incidence of Gi was observed in 7 samples of groundnut cake and 2 samples of compound cattle feed. Anatoxin Bj appears to be more prevalent than aflatoxin B2 and G1 as evident from the samples screened in this study.
