The Effect of Fish Waste Feed/Corn Offal Based Diets on Performance Characteristics in Early Weaned Cross-Bred Ft Nigerian Lambs

Abstract

Six weeks old, crossbred (West African long-legged x South-east dwarf of Nigerian) early weaned lambs at 15kg (n = 36) average live weight fed levels 0–9 percent fish waste feed (FWF) (a product offish waste-fines, heads, undeveloped eggs, livers, intestines and condemned flshes) diets in an intensive productions system using a 4 x 3 RED (pen area = 0.60m2 lamb). Lambs were slaughtered at different ages, liveweight 35kg (n = 24). Overall daily weight gain of FWF diets fed lambs were 114-266g compared with 101g for the control (with 0% FWF) diets for lambs (tb= 10.17, p<0.0 1). On daily feed intake, the FWF diets fed lambs showed superiority over the control lambs (tb = 3.35, p > 0.05). Comparing the total feed intake, the FWF diets fed lambs had a lower intake over the control iambs (1b=5.44, p < 0.05), an imprnved days to 35 kg liveweight (tb= 4.8 I, p<0.05), a better efficiency of feed utilization (tb = 5.37, p<0.05), and an improved yield (tb = 1.36, p>0.05).
