Heat of warming (HW) of feed and water ingested by buffalo and cow calves fed on berseem fodder has been determined. The HW values (MJ/h/d) were 3.22±0.15 and 2.31±0.05 for buffalo and cow calves, respectively. The corresponding HW values as percent of metabolizable energy intake were 8.12±0.24 and 7.29±0.36. The HW values as percent of fasting metabolism were 20.48±0.95 and 20.04±0.87 for buffalo and cow calves, respectively. The consideration of HW appears to be relevant while assessing the energy requirements of ruminants in cold season.
