Effect of nutritional status on performance of laying birds

Abstract

Indigenous birds (80) were divided into four groups of 20 birds each to evaluate the optimum dietary level of protein and energy during the laying period from 24th to 42nd week of age. Four diets were prepared with two levels each of protein (16 and 18%) and energy (2600 and 2800 Kcal ME/kg). Each level of dietary protein was tested against the two levels of dietary energy in a 2x2 factorial manner. Percentage of hen day egg production and feed efficiency were significantly better at 18% CP and 2600 Kcal ME/kg. However, performance efficiency index and balance of N, Ca and P did not differ significantly among the groups. Hence, high protein and low energy diet i.e. 18% CP and 2600 Kcal ME/kg is suitable for indigenous birds for egg production in hot humid climate.
