Energy and protein requirements of emu growers

Abstract

A study was conducted to determine the dietary energy and protein requirements of emu (Dromaius novaehollandiae) growers (9–20 weeks of age). 16 emu chicks randomly distributed into 4 equal groups were offered diet containing either 15 or 18 per cent protein each at 2400 or 2600 Kcal ME/kg diet in a 2x2 factorial experiment in individual pens. Body weight gain of emu growers was higher (P<0.01) for the diets containing 18 per cent protein than 15 per cent, irrespective of energy levels. Feed intake was higher (P<0.01) for the diets with 18 per cent protein and 2400 Kcal ME/kg diet than 15 per cent and 2600 Kcal ME/kg diet. Feed efficiency was better on 18 per cent and 2600 Kcal ME/kg diet, than 15 per cent and 2400 Kcal ME/kg diet. Feed cost/kg of body weight gain was lower (P<0.01) for 18 per cent than 15 per cent protein diets, irrespective of energy levels. It was concluded that a dietary level of 18 per cent protein with 2600 Kcal ME/kg diet was found to be ideal for optimum growth in emu growers.
