Use of unconventoinal protein supplements in the ration of chicks
Abstract
A 8 weeks trial was conducted to find out the effect of unconventional protein supplements, polanga (Callophyllum inophyllum) oil cake, niger (Guizotia abyssinica) oil cake and undecorticated tamarind (Tamarindus indica) seed on the performance of chicks. One hundred straight run Rhode Island Red chicks randomly distributed into four groups were offered either control (C), 5% polanga oil cake (POC), 16% niger oil cake (NOC) or 5% undecorticated tamarind seed (UDTS). The eighth week body weight of all the groups was comparable. The feed conversion ratio of groups C, POC, NOC and UDTS were 2.75, 2.78, 2.84 and 3.07 respectively. The growth depression observed in group fed ration containing POC and UDTS might be due to presence of calaustralin in POC and tannic acid in UDTS.
