A survey of locally available feed resources, feeding pattern, socio economic status and the problems of the farmers of the hill zone of Assam comprising of Karbi Anglong and North Cachar districts was conducted. A total of 100 farmers were selected for the study. Rice, maize and wheat were the principal cereal crops cultivated in the region. Among the oil seed crops mustard, sesame and rape were main. The by-products of these crops were mainly fed to their animals. Paddy straw formed the main source of dry roughage. Crossbred cows were given more importance than the local cows. The production of milk per household was 3.40 liter per day. The lower production was due to unscientific feeding of their animals. The picture of socio-economic status of the farmers revealed that more than 50 per cent were involved in Agriculture and Animal Husbandry practices. The literacy rate in the entire zone was 68.21%. 86 per cent people were ready to adopt modern technology to improve the productivity. It was concluded that feed and fodder resources available in the region should be fed scientifically and judiciously, to improve the productivity of the animals which may in turn improve the socio-economic status of the farmers in the hill zone of Assam.
