Evaluation of mango peel waste ensiled with napier-bajra hybrid grass as livestock feed

Abstract

Napier-bajra hybrid grass was ensiled with mango peel waste (MPW) at 10, 15 and 20% levels each for 4, 5 and 6 weeks. The IVDMD was significantly higher at 10 and 15% level of MPW ensiled for 4 or 5 weeks respectively. The pH (4.3 vs. 4.0), lactic acid content (2.21 vs. 2.53%) and palatability in sheep (58.87 vs. 61.28g DMI/kg W0.75) at 10% MPW and 2% molasses silages were statistically similar. The DCP and TDN contents of respective silages were 3.94, 52.70 and 3.69, 55.47% respectively. The growth rate of lambs was statistically similar. It was concluded that napier-bajra hybrid grass could be ensiled with of 10% MPW instead of 2% molasses without affecting the quality of silage.
