In order to find out the antioxidant status in different body organs of buffalo, 18 samples each from five organs (liver, lung, heart, kidney and skeletal muscle) were collected at 15 days interval from slaughter house and stored at −70°C for homogenization. The supernatant collected from individual homogenized tissue was used for the assay of different antioxidant enzymes viz. superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase and thiobarbituric acid reactive substance (TEARS). The levels of SOD and catalase were maximum in heart tissues and minimum in kidney tissues of buffalo. The activity of TB ARS was higher in liver tissues and lower in skeletal muscle of buffalo. The activities of SOD and catalase were significantly different in the different tissues (P<0.01). The levels of catalase and TB ARS varied significantly at different intervals of sample collection. Catalase and SOD activity was positively correlated in cardiac muscle (P<0.01). Similarly, TEARS and catalase also showed significant positive correlation in different tissues of buffalo (P<0.01). The information generated during the study could be used as reference values because very scanty information is available on the antioxidant status in the different tissues of buffaloes.
