Development of Protein Concentrate for Poultry Feeding from Unconventional Feed Resources

Abstract

Three protein concentrates viz, DPC11, DPC13 and DPC14 were developed by incorporating different proportions of collagen meal, keratin meal, offal meal, duckweed meal, hatchery by product meal and blood meal to replace the commercial protein concentrates (CPC) and tested in three independent feeding trials with 198 day-old straight-run broiler chicks. The birds were divided into 6 groups having 33 birds in each. Each treatment was again replicated 3 times having 11 birds. For each DPC, six estimated iso-nitrogenous (21.75% CP) and iso-caloric (3027 Kcal/kg) broiler diets namely A, B, C, D, E and F were formulated where CPC was replaced quantitatively with DPC @ 0, 10, 25, 50, 75 and 100%, respectively. Feed intake, final body weight, total weight gain and feed conversion ratio (FCR) of broiler were not affected (P > 0.05) by the level of replacement of CPC by DPC for all three mixtures. This indicated that DPC can quantitatively replace CPC in broiler diet. As compared to that of 100% CPC, the live weight gains were 6.27, -128.25 and -90.25 g higher for 100% in DPC 11, DPC 13 and DPC 14, respectively. In DPC 14, final live weight of experimental birds was lowest (P < 0.05) at 100% replacement of CPC. The highest live weight was at 10% level of replacement in this group. Similarly, live weight of broiler in DPC 13, though did not change significantly but was highest at 75% level of replacement. It was concluded that among the developed protein concentrate mixtures, DPC 11 can quantitatively replace the whole commercial protein concentrate used in this study, while, DPC 13 and DPC 14 may replace up to 75 and 10% of the CPC, respectively.
