Effect of Plant Based Attractants on Growth and Feed Utilization in Ompok pabda (Siluridae) fry

Abstract

A 60 day experiment was conducted to study the efficacy of plant based attractants in the feed of Ompok pabda fry (av. weight 0.48±0.05g). The formulated diets contained fish meal, corn powder, soyabean meal, vegetable oil, vitamin and mineral mixture with 1% feed attractant. The different attractants used in feeds are: Feed 1 (Control), Feed 2 (Ekangi), Feed 3 (Tambul), Feed 4 (Kharboj), Feed 5 (Chotokakla) and Feed 6 (Lata kasturi). The net weight gains were 0.23±0.07, 0.75±0.05, 0.46±0.04, 0.27±0.04, 0.31±0.01, 0.37±0.08 respectively in Feed 1 to 6 respectively. The growth study with different attractants revealed that the net weight gain, specific growth rate (SGR) and feed intake were significantly higher (P<0.05) in pabda fry fed Feed-2 compared to other groups. Feed conversion ratio (FCR) was significantly (P<0.05) lower in Feed 2. Carcass proximate composition did not differ significantly (P>0.05) among the groups fed with different plant based feed attractants. Thus from the present experiment it may be concluded that Feed 2 having Ekangi (1%) performed better in terms of growth and feed intake in O.pabda fry.
