Effect of Intensive and Semi-Intensive Rearing Systems on Overall Performance of Turkey

The present study was conducted to determine the effect of intensive and semi-intensive rearing conditions on growth performance of Turkey. Eight week old 48 turkey poults were taken and divided in to three replicates per treatment and there were eight birds in each replicate. The birds reared under semi-intensive condition had outdoor access while control group was kept indoor. The results revealed that the average body weight gain was significantly higher (P<0.05) in intensively reared turkey birds compared to semi-intensively raised birds. The feed intake was significantly lower (P<0.05) in semi-intensive system than the intensive system. However the feed conversion ratio was significantly (P<0.05) better in intensive system between the two rearing systems. The overall economics was found better in semi-intensive reared birds. It can be concluded that although growth performance was better in intensive system but it is economical to raise birds under semi-intensive system.
