Evaluation of faeces samples retrieved from rectum of 4 animals each of Bhadawari and Murrah buffaloes for microbial activity revealed that microscopic bacterial counts were 10.74 and 10.90 log 10/ml in faeces of Bhadawari and Murrah buffaloes. Sporangia counts were 4.22 and 4.52 log 10/ml in faeces of Bhadawari and Murrah buffaloes. Protozoa counts in faeces of both buffalo breeds were not detected as most protozoa get lysed. The mean numbers of different morphological groups of bacteria viz single cocci, paired cocci, cluster cocci, chain cocci, rod with round end, tetrad cocci, rod with square end, curved cocci were 19.75, 7.00, 6.5, 1.75, 3.25, 0.75 and 1.25 x109/ml in faeces of Bhadawari, while concentration of these bacteria was 33.25, 8.75, 8.5, 4.25, 3.00, 2.00, 2.00 and 1.75 x109/ml in faeces of Murrah. The log10 value for total viable bacteria was 5.79 and 6.09 for Bhadawari and Murrah buffaloes. The mean concentration of amylolytic and cellulolytic and proteolytic bacteria was 5.79, 5.60 and 5.93 in faeces of Bhadawari buffalo against 5.85, 5.77and 5.91 log10/ml for Murrah. Results indicate that feces have bacterial and fungal activity, while no protozoa activity in feces of both buffalo breeds.
