Nine crossbred cattle in 3 groups of 3 each, fitted with rumen cannualae were fed cither concentrate mixture and wheat straw (1), concentrate mixture and ammoniated straw (2) or green berseem and straw (3) to study the nitrogen metabolism. Nitrogen absorption was significantly (P<0.05) different among the groups being higher in the group fed on diet 1. Urinary nitrogen excretion was significantly (P<0.01) higher in ammoniated straw fed group 2. Nitrogen retention as percent of the absorbed N was appreciably higher for animals fed on diet 1. Animals in the 3 groups maintained marginally positive N balance. Various nitrogen fractions in the SRL were significantly higher (P <0.01) in animals fed on diet 2. No significant difference for TCA-N was observed due to difference in the nature of dietary nitrogen.
