Influence of Dietary Energy Levels on Urinary Nitrogen and Carbon Excretion in Buffaloes

Abstract

Twelve adult male buffaloes divided into 3 equal groups were fed isoproteinous rations with varying energy levels. In medium (A), low (B) and high (C) energy groups, the intake of DE and ME were 10.70 ±1.10, 8.68±1.00; 8.32±0.40, 6.62±0.36 and 12.23±0.74, 10.16±0.75 Meal/day respectively. Intake of C and N in corresponding groups were 2517±82.8, 71.3±1.41; 2033±27.7, 66.9±0.62 and 2810±138.6, 66.4±0.92 g/day. Excretion of urinary C and N in groups A, B and C were 7.52±1.16”, 20.61 ±2.39; 11.49 ± 2.43, 23.70±3.37 and 4.99±0.58, 12.74±1.29 g/day respectively, which was significantly higher for group B than the other groups. Urinary C was significantly (p<0.01) correlated (r=—0.66) with the DE intake. There was also highly significant (p<0.01) correlation (r=0.77) between urinary C and N excretion. Levels of energy influenced the excretion of C and N in the urine.
