Twenty weaned Large White Yorkshire piglets (116.65±1.84 days of age with an average of 24.02±0.53 kg body weight) were randomly divided into two groups with five replicates in each group. The two groups of piglets were randomly allotted to the two dietary treatments, T1 (0% animal fat in the diet) and T2 (5% animal fat in the diet). Blood samples were collected at day one of the experiment. At the end of the experiment five animals from each treatment were slaughtered for muscle and blood sample collection. The plasma triglycerides, total cholesterol, HDL, LDL, VLDL cholesterol, LDL: HDL and total cholesterol: HDL ratio of pigs maintained on two dietary treatments ranged from 7.20 to 59.20 mg/dl; 78.60 to147.40 mg/dl; 37.20 to56.60 mg/dl; 33.96 to 78.96 mg/dl; 7.44 to 11.84 mg/dl; 1.12 to 1.63 and 2.12 to 2.63, respectively. The animals in T2 had higher (P<0.01) levels of all plasma lipid parameters. The muscle triglycerides, total cholesterol, HDL, LDL and VLDL cholesterol of pigs maintained on two dietary treatments ranged from 30.28 to 32.40 mg, 52.29 and 55.73 mg, 26.20 and 27.15 mg, 20.03 and 22.10 mg and 6.05 and 6.48 mg per 100 g and values were statistically similar (P>0.05). This study reveals that supplementation of animal fat over and above the requirement of pigs elevated the lipid profile of serum without changing the muscle lipid profile.
