Performance of Growing Black Bengal Goats as Affected by Different Levels of Crude Protein in Complete Pellet Diets

Abstract

Fifteen castrated male goats were divided into 3 groups of 5 animals each to study the effect of different levels of crude protein in the diet on performance, digestibility, carcass yield and economics of feeding in Black Bengal goats. Three complete pellet feeds were prepared using ground Napier (Pennisetum purpureum) grass hay and concentrate mixture in a ratio of 60: 40 (Table 1). The standard diet (SP) contained 14% CP as per NRC (1981) recommendation while compared to SP, low protein (LP) and high protein (HP) diets contained 10% lower CP and 10% higher CP, respectively. CP intake was the highest (P<0.05) in HP group and lowest in LP group while intake of DM and ME were similar in all groups. FCR was better (P<0.01) in HP group whereas protein conversion was similar among all three groups. Nitrogen retention was higher (P<0.05) in HP group, Digestibility of nutrients and carcass yield were similar in three groups. It was concluded that CP level of 15.40% in the complete pellet diet of Black Bengal goats was beneficial for commercial goat farming under stall feeding system in Bangladesh.
