Abstract

A field experiment was conducted during rabi season of 2012–13 at forage research farm of ICAR-NDRI Karnal to study the effect of application of nitrogen levels and sowing time on yield and chemical composition of turnip (Brassica compestris var. rapa L.) fodder using five levels of nitrogen (0, 40, 80, 120, 160 kg N/ha) and four sowing times (26 Sept., 11Oct., 26 Oct. and 11 Nov.) during 2012–13 with four replication in split plot design. The sowing on 26th September and 11th November showed better (P<0.05) growth and forage quality, respectively. Turnip fodder yield was highest (703.29 q/ha) in the crop sown on 26th September. The highest DM yield (81.85 q/ha) and CP content (13.50%) were obtained with N application @ 160 kg/ha.
