Fatty Acid Profile of Fillet and Liver and Proximate Composition of Puntius gonionotus and Puntius sarana

Abstract

The present study was conducted to determine fatty acid profile of fillet and liver and whole body nutrient content of P. gonionotus and P. sarana. The crude protein content was 16.61±0.32 and 17.18±0.14% in P.gonionotus and P. sarana, respectively. The total lipid content was higher (P<0.05) in P. gonionotus (5.60±0.15%) than P. sarana (3.92 ±0.12%). Total ash contents were 1.98±0.03 and 2.20±0.04% in P. sarana and P. gonionotus, respectively. Moisture content was 74.92±0.64% in P. gonionotus and 76.43±0.98% in P. sarana. The energy content of fillet of P. gonionotus was 5.87±0.36 kJ/g and 5.12±0.27 kJ/g in P. sarana. The most abundant fatty acids in these fish species were palmitic acid, oleic acid and linoleic acid. Though docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) content of fillet of both the species were same but the level of liver DHA was higher (P<0.05) in P. gonionotus. In both fillet and liver, the level of n-6 PUFA was higher (P<0.05) than n-3 PUFA. The present study showed the potentiality of P. gonionotus and P. saranaas to be beneficial in terms of nutritional facts.
