Biochemical and Histopathological Changes in Liver of Chicks Fed on Aflatoxin Containing Diets After Detoxification

Abstract

Day-old 160 Hyline male clucks were divided into 4 groups (T1 to T4) of 40 chicks each and fed anatoxins at levels of 0, 0.5, 1.0 and 1.0 ppm (after aflatoxin inactivation) respectively for 8 weeks. The weekly body weight gains, were 61.27±1.20, 64.63±11.22, 59.55±1.19 and 59.83±0.84 g in T1 through T4 respectively which indicated that, gain in weight was better in T2 in comparision to others. Feed consumption and feed : gain ratios were almost similar in all the different treatment groups. Eviscerated yields, total drawn weights, meat and bone weights as well as liver, kidney, heart and gizzard weights (as per cent live weight) did not differ significantly among the different treatment groups. Liver vitamin A and glycogen reserves were also not influenced by the treatments. However, histological alterations in the portal tracts of liver tissues were evident in all the 4 chicks of T3 and in only 1. chick of T2 indicating influence of aflatoxin dose levels. The micro-sections of kidneys from all the 4 treatments did not manifest any alteration.
