Yeast Sludge from Molasses Based Distilleries as a Feed for Livestock

Experiments were conducted to determine the nutritive value of unwashed dried yeast sludge, a by-product of molasses based distilleries. When 50 per cent of the concentrate mixture fed to control group of Muzzaffarnagari rams was replaced by the unwashed yeast sludge, the palatability of experimental concentrate mixture was quite satisfactory. The DM, DCP and TDN intake (g/kg W^0.75) in the control and experimental group of sheep was 52.8, 44.0; 2.8, 3.3 and 30.0, 23.4 and for cattle 81.6, 3.3 and 34.7 respectively. Both sheep and cattle fed on yeats sludge ration recorded positive balance of N, Ca and P. The DCP and TDN content of yeast sludge determined from experiment on sheep was 16.1 and 47,1 per cent respectively.
