To isolate and identify the toxic constituents of Karanja (Pongamia glabra Vent.), the petroleum ether extract of the seed was subjected to column chromatographic separation over silica gel using solvents of increasing polarities. The banzene eluates showed high toxic property to chicks. TLC studies showed that the benzene eluates contained four compounds, out of which only karanjin —3 methoxy furan (20”, 3” : 7, 8) flavone and Lanceolatin-B-(2°, 3”, : 7,8) furano Havone could be isolated in crystalline states. The toxic-effects of karanja seed were considered to be due to lanceolatin-B and certain other phenolic constituents occurring in the oil.
