Abstract

The effect of supplementation of dried Ipit-ipil (Leucaena leucocephata) leaves and concentrate mixture on the growth performance of carahcifers grazing on Themeda pasture was studied. In phase 1, lasting for 6 months, the average daily gain (ADG) of animals grazing on pasture alone (control —T1) was —0.07 kg; grazing plus supplemented with dried Ipil-ipil leaves containing 14% CP (T2) was 0.12 kg; grazing + concentrate mixture containing 14.3% CP (T3) was 0.12 kg and those grazing and supplemented with an equal proportion of dried Ipil-ipil leaves and concentrate containing 15.6% CP was 0,16 kg (T4). In phase 2, lasting for 2.5 months, urea molasses mineral block (UMMB) was fed to all the animals in different experimental groups to study growth rate. The average daily gain in the control group (T1) was 0.50±0.7 kg whereas in each of the experimental groups (T2, T3 and T4) it was 0.58 kg. This was attributed to the improved intake and utilization of poor quality roughage and availability of N and energy from UMMB.
