Abstract

An experiment was conducted to study the effect of feedingProsopis juliflora pods (ground) at 0, 15 and 30% levels in concentrate mixtures to eighteen lactating Kankrej cows divided in 3 groups (T1 to T3) on certain rumen metabolites. The results revealed that the rumen pH values were 7.20, 7.05 and 7.22 (P>0.05) in T1, T2 and T3, respectively. The average total-N and soluble-N concentrations in rumen liquor were significantly lower in Prosopis juliflora pods fed cows (T2 and T3) as compared to control (T1). NH3-N concentration slightly increased in cows fed Piosopis juliflora pods, but the group differences were not significant. Frotein-N and NPN concentrations were apparently lowered on feeding Prosopis juliflora pods in comparison to control ration bat the treatment differences againwere not significant. The TVFA production in rumen liquor was apparently higher on feeding Prosopis juliflora pods in the ration as compared to the control ration but the treatment differences were not significant. The results thus suggested that feeding of ground Prosopis juliflora pods upto 30% level in the concentrate mixture for milch cows had no deleterious effect on various rumen metabolites.
