Abstract

Six healthy rumen flstulated male Murrah buffalo calves were fed : (i) maintenance ration comprising concentrate mixture (20 per cent CP + wheat straw (CR)) and (ii) Urea-molasses ration by including 20 per cent molasses and substituting 5.8 per cent CP of CR with 2 per cent urea 4- wheat straw (UMR) in a switch over experiment.

Significant increase in BUN (blood urea N) and serum NPN contents both at 0 h and 6 h were observed on UMR in comparison to those on CR. However, the serum protein and lactic acid concentrations did not differ (P > 0.05) on two rations. The serum LDH (lactic dehydrogenase) acitivity was significantly reduced on UMR both at 0 h and 6 h post-feeding as compared to that observed on CR.
