Guar (Cyamopsis tetraganoloba) meal samples (250 g) treated with formaldehyde (HCHO) at 0.0 (untreated), 1.0, 1.5, 2.0, 2.5 and 3.0 per cent levels on CP basis, were incubated (0.5 g) with buffalo rumen inoculum (10 ml) and McDougall’s buffer (40 ml) saturated with carbon dioxide for 48 h at 39 °C and in vitro fermentation and IVDMD were studied. The concentration of total-N, protein-N, NPN, NH3-N and TVFA and N degradability decreased significantly (P < 0.01) with the increase in the level of HCHO treatment. The IVDMD did not differ from 1.0 to 2.5 per cent HCHO treatment level. The studies suggested that 1.0 to 1.5 g HCHO per 100g CP gave optimum protection to guar meal proteins.
