Abstract

Sixteen Black Bengal castrated male goats (similar age and body weights) were equally allotted to four treatments and fed 400 g urea treated rice straw as basal roughage + 100 g green grass supplemented with 50 g sesame oil cake (A). 50 g sesame oil cake + 20 g mineral mixture (B), 20 g fish meal (C) and 20 g fish meal + 20 g mineral mixture (D). In another experiment immediately following the above, 12 goats were again divided into 3 equal groups and fed 400 g untreated rice straw as a basal roughage + 100 g green grass without any supplementation (E), with supplementation of 50 g sesame oil cake + 20 g mineral mixture (F) and 20 g of fish meal + 20 g mineral mixture (E). Irrespective of supplements DM digestibility was higher (P < 0.01) for urea treated straw (39.84 to 67.05 per cent) as compared to untreated straw (30.31 to 50.87 per cent). The results further indicated that the supplementation of mineral mixture improved significantly (P < 0.01) the DM digestibility of both untreated or urea treated straw. However, the supplementation of sesame oil cake and fish meal had variable effect when untreated straw was fed to animals.
