The effect of incorporation of malua (Madhuca indica) seed cake (MSC) as such and after water treatment (PMSC) in the ration of crossbred calves in terms of growth and nutrient utilization was studied. In experiment I, 15 crossbred female calves (7-10 m; 67 110 kg) divided into 3 equal groups were fed concentrate mixture without MSC(A), with 30 per cent P MSC (B) and 30 per cent untreated MSC (C). The body weight gain, DM consumption, feed conversion efficiency and digestibility coefficients of EE and CF did not differ significantly amongst the three groups. However, digestibility coefficients for DM and NFE were significantly (P < 0.0S) lower in the groups R and C than group A. The CP digestibility of the ration containing PMSC was significantly (P < 0.05) lower than the other two rations.
In experiment II, 24 crossbred (8-10 m; 72-123 kg) male calves were similarly divided into 4 equal groups and fed concentrate mixture without any MSC (Aj), with 20 per cent MSC (B1) with 30 per cent MSC (C1) and concentrate mixture fed to group B1 but without any MSC (D1, negative control). There was no significant difference in the body weight gain, DM intake, feed conversion efficiency and digestibility coefficients of DM, CP, NFE and CF amongst different groups. However, digestibility of EE was significantly (P < 0.05) lower in control group A than other three groups. There was decreasing trend in the digestibility of CP as the level of MSC increased in the ration. The results indicated that 20 per cent MSC can be incorporated in the concentrate mixture of calves without any adverse effect on body weight gain.
