Sub-Acute Toxicity of Lindane (β-Benzene Hexachloride) in Ruminants

Abstract

Nine well fed and healthy bucks (19.5-26.5 kg) were divided into 3 equal groups and fed on concentrate mixture and green berseem fodder to meet their requirements. While the bucks in groups 2 and 3 were administered orally 0.25 (tolerance level) and 0.50 (double the tolerance level) mg lindaue/kg DM intake/d for 30d, those in group 1 served as control. After the administration of lindane was stopped and bucks were maintained on lower plane of nutrition. Decreased packed cell volume (P < 0.05), hyperglycemia and high activities of SGOT and SGPT were observed in group 3 than in other groups on 30th d of administration. The normal values were, however, attained after the administration of lindane was stopped. Although the Hb content was not affected, the erythrocytes were larger in size and weight than normal in lindane administered bucks. Total RBC and WBC counts were also decreased in lindane administered animals but the variation among groups was significant (P < 0.01) only for RBC. These results indicated that the level of lindane, higher than the prescribed tolerance limit, was toxic specially under malnutrition condition.
