Tannin Content in some Agro-Tndustrial Byproducts of Gujarat

Abstract

Tannin content of various agro-industrial byproducts including few tree leaves ranged from 0.18 to 16.11 per cent on DM basis. Babul (Acacia nilotiai) pods contained the maximum concentration (16.11 per cent) while Cassia tora seed (extracted) and Sheria cake the least (0.18 per cent) on DM basis. The other agro-industrial byproducts and waste materials, viz, deoilcd Sal (shorea robusta) seed meal, babul seed chuni, Prosop is juliflora pods, coffee husks, neem (Azad rachta indica) seed cake, mathdi (Phaseolus aconitifolius) contained tannin in the range of 0.47 to 8.81 per cent. Some of the other products analysed for tannins, such as guar (Cyamopsis tetragonoloba), bhardo tumba (Lagenaria siceraria) cake, bijada (Citrulus vulgaris) cake, groundnut (Arachis hypogeae) shells and dhania (Coriandrum sativum) husks etc. contained negligible amount of tannins.
