Inadequacy of Isolated Mowrin as a Standard for Colorimetric Estimation of Mahua (Bassia latifolia) Seed Cake Saponins

Abstract

The saponins (mowrin) of malum (Bassia latifolia) seed cake (MSC) being soluble in water are quantitatively removed from deoiled-MSC in its tannin-free water extract (TFWE), which showed colour reaction with concentrated H2SO4 similar to that of isolated mowrin solution. The absorbance recorded at 520 mµ with different concentrations of mowrin and TFWE of DMSC separately, showed linear relationship within certain concentration. The colorimetric quantitative calibration for mowrin content in TFWE of DMSC using isolated mowrin as standard resulted in its over assessment. It indicated that probably in the cumbersome process of mowrin isolation, fraction of mowrin got denatured which produced lower absorbance with higher concentration as compared to the cent per cent intact mowrin in its natural form present in TFWE of DMSC.
