Comparison of Chemical Composition of Gullwanda (Phalaris Minor) and Maize Seeds

Abstract

Gullidanda (Phalaris minor) seeds were comparable with maize grains in relation to DM, NFE, and available carbohydrates, whereas these were slightly superior in CP (11.5 vs 9.2 per cent), EE (5.9 vs 3.9 per cent) contents over the maize. However, Gullidanda seeds were comparable to maize in EFA composition (Linoleic acid—42.92 vs 50.0 per cent and linolenic acid—2.59 vs 1.20 per cent) and deficient in all essential amino acids. Similarly the seeds of Gullidanda were richer in mineral contents—Ca (0.7 vs 0.03 per cent), P (2.0 vs 0.31 per cent), Na (0.20 vs 30 ppm), Cu (62 vs 3.6 ppm), Zn (32 vs 21 ppm) and Mn (10.9 vs 6 ppm) over maize seed.
