Abstract

Microbial treated paddy straw was prepared by two stage technique. During the solid state fermentation, the CP content of microbially treated Paddy straw increased to 13.79 % due to capture of excess ammonia and its subsequent conversion to protein by Caprinus fimetarius. increas in temperatures above 42°C during SSF gave rise to increased microbial contaminants Eight Alpine x Beetal non-pregnant goats (1 1/2-2 yrs; 32-43 kg) were randomly divided into 2 equal groups and fed either 4% urea treated (T1) or microbial treated (T2) paddv straw as sole feed. Digestibility coefficients of proximate principles as well as fibre constituents of straw were higher in urea treated straw giving higher TDN value than the microbial treated straw. However, the microbial treated straw contained higher DCP content than the urea treated straw. Similarly the goats exhibited higher N balances in T2 than T1.
