Abstract

In Vitro rumen microbial degradation of extracted sapogenins (mowrin) and sapo-genols from malua (Bassia latifolia) seed cake at 6,12 and 24 h of incubation were 12.23, 24.60 and 46.23% (sapogenins) and 23.80, 31.05 and 35.06% (sapogenols), respectively. Paper chromatography revealed three principle fractions of mowrin and two of sapogenols which after microbial degradation appeared at different Rr values than their basic fractions. After microbial degradation, colour and Rr values of these fractions changed.
