Mahua (Bassia latifolia) sees cake (MSC) was treatea with 6-8% (WAV) ureu and ensiled for 6wks In steel silos on a laboratory scale. The process required thorough maceration of overnight water soaked MSC before mixing urea and maainn It as slurry with more water. The material got packed up with the water absorption as the reaction of ammonia released from urea progerssed. More water was added to bring it in slurry form again and again before the completion of the process in about 6 wks time. The process resulted in detoxification of MSC by reducing the levels of mowrin and tannins without any loss of urea-N or the DM. Four adull trossbred (Holstein Friesian x Hariana and brownswiss X Haryana) bull calves 1 ½ to 2 yrs; 350 kg) were fed @ 4.0 kg wet UA-MSC with wheat straw ad lib and 1.0 kg molasses which provided adequate nutrients (CP:469 g; TDN:2.92 kg) for maintenance. Though DCP availability (16Sg) was 75% of requirement, the N balance (5.7 g/d) was indicative of the satisfied need of DCP due to efficient utilization of absorbed-N fraction.
