180 hybrid male chicks (12d old ;48 ±3g) were randomly divided into 5 equal groups with 3 replicates each and fed either on control diet (D1) or diet substituted wiih dolied Karanj (Pongamia glabra Vent.) meal (DKM) a) a % (D,(or 10% (D,(levels or diet substituted with Makhan (Sapium sebiferum roxb). Karnel meal (MKM) at 5 % (D4) or 10% (D5) levels for 42 d. It was obseved that the feeding of diets containing either DKM or MKM did not support good growth rate in chicks. The depression in growth was more with the level of test material and increased CF level in test diets. The differences in body weight gain, feee intake end feee efficiency were, however, not-signiflcant.
Deoiled Karanj (Pongamia glaba Vent.) meal (DKM) has been eecommenden for the feeding of cattle being a good source of DCP and TDN1,2. Although, it is the cheapest cake available in the market, its use in poultry feeding is not yet popular. Similarly, makhan (Sapium sebifeum roxb.) in an ornamental type of tree which gives profuse eearing of iti fruits, the kenels of which contain good amount of oil (5.47 %) and protein(13.2%). The effect of substitution of DKM and makhan kernel meal (MKM) In place of deoiled groundnut cake and wheat bran in the diet of starter chicks was studied and the results are presented here.
