Abstract

The potential extent of lignin digestion in 9 grass and 5 iegume forage species was determined. Legumes were more lignified than grasses. Potential extent of lignin digestion showed wide variation ranging from -15.89 to 61.69%. Para and Rhodes among grasses and Silverleaf desmodium among legumes exhibited negative lignin digestibilities. There was a net loss (digestion) of lignin In the rumen which appeared to be influencedby the composition of the ceil wall.
