The efficacy of certain fungicides on the growth inhibition of Aspergillus parasiticus was tested in vitro. The minimum effective concentrations were 0.1 % for JK Stein, Bavistin and Pausin M; and 0.3 and 0.15% for Dithane M-45 and Topsin M, respectively. Tbiram and Vitavax were ineffective. One-day-old broiler chicks were fed diets containing fungicides at their effective levels for eight weeks. Contrary to other groups, Dithane M-45 caused 100% mortality within three weeks of feeding. Body weights and feed efficiencies of the chicks of control (no fungicide) did not differ significantly from those of JK Stein and Bavistin groups but were depressed significantly (P<0.05) in the Pausin M and Topsin M groups. The vital organs of chicks from the control, JK Stein and Bavistin groups showed normal histology. Hence JK Stein and Bavistin were found to be efficatious in controlling the growth of A. Parasiticus without creating health hazards to the chicken system. However further detailed studies are needed to confirm the present finding.
