Abstract

Postpartum period is a normal physiological process. The important role of the nurse is to assist the patient to adjust with the postpartum period and also support them to make a new life. Hence a study was conducted to assess the effectiveness of SIM on knowledge of postnatal care among primigravida women in selected hospital, Puducherry with the objectives to assess the level of pre test knowledge of primigravida women on postnatal care, to assess the effectiveness of SIM on knowledge of postnatal care among primigravida women and to associate the level of pre test knowledge with selected demographic variables. The study was conducted in selected hospitals at Puducherry among 50 primigravida women who were selected using non probability purposive sampling and also those who met the inclusion criteria. The Quantitative evaluative approach was used and the study design was pre experimental one group pre test post test design. To collect the data structured knowledge questionnaire was administered followed by administration of SIM. On the 5th day effectiveness of SIM is assessed by conducting posttest. The statistical analysis of the data shows that the self instructional module was effective in improving knowledge as the ‘t’ value is 20.909 which is greater than the table value at p<0.05. The mean posttest score is significantly higher than the mean pre-test score, so the hypothesis is accepted. There is no association between the level of pretest knowledge and selected demographic variables such as age, religion, family type, occupation and monthly income except for education. It is significance as the calculated χ2 value is 11.43 at 0.05 levels of significance as the calculated value is higher, so the hypothesis is accepted.

To assess the level of pre test knowledge of primigravida women on postnatal care.

To assess the effectiveness of self instructional module on knowledge of postnatal care among primigravida women.

To associate the level of pre test knowledge with selected demographic variables.

The research design adopted for this study is pre experimental design, of which one group pretestposttest design.

The study was conducted at various hospitals in Puducherry.

In this study, the samples are the primigravida women who were admitted to the antenatal wards of selected hospitals, Puducherry and also those who satisfy the inclusion criteria are included as samples in the study. The sample size was 50.

The researcher found that there was a significant improvement in knowledge of primigravida women after the administration of self instructional module on postnatal care and there was significant association between levels of pre-test knowledge of primigravida women with selected demographic as educational status of the samples.

Most of the primigravida women had average knowledge on postnatal care. There was significant difference between the mean pre test knowledge scores of primigravida women and post-test knowledge scores in all the areas of postnatal care and the Self instructional module was found to be effective in improving the level knowledge on post natal care among primigravida women.
