Experimental study on Growth and Development of Infants

Abstract

The UNICEF report on state of children today reveals that 9.7 million in the world children die before completing five years of age. In India, over 2.1 million children die annually before reaching their fifth birthday in which 50% of child morality is due to neo-natal reasons, as opposed to 37% across the world. The report places India at number one spot in children's deaths.7 Developmental delay is estimated to be present in about 10% of children. It is possible to recognize severe developmental disorders early in infancy1. An experimental study was conducted to assess the “Effectiveness of planned teaching programme on Growth and Development of Infants among Mothers in a Selected PHC at Bagalkot.”

1. To determine the level of knowledge of mothers on growth and development of infants as measured by an interview schedule.2. To find the association between demographic variables and pre-test level of knowledge on growth and development of infant.3. To find the effectiveness of planned teaching programme on growth and development of an infant among mothers as measured by the same interview schedule.

Experimental design was used in this study. The setting of the study was the study was conducted in PHC in the selected rural area at Bagalkot, Karnataka. Purposive non-probability sampling technique was found appropriate to select 50 mothers from the selected PHC as the sample for the study.

Findings of the demographic variables revealed that highest percentages (84%) of the respondents were in the age group of 19–24 years and majorities (86%) of them were Hindu. Forty two percent of the respondents had high school education and majorities (84%) of mother were house wife. Fifty percent of the respondents had a family income between Rs 2, 001-4, 000. Fifty four percent of the respondents were from joint family and 46% of the respondents had a source of information from others. Assessment of the level of knowledge of mothers regarding growth and development of infants revealed that 88% of the sample had an moderate knowledge and only 12% of the respondents had poor knowledge.
