Effect of video assisted teaching on knowledge and practice for prevention of hypertensive renal diseases among patients with hypertension

Kidney diseases are the most important cause of mortality and disability in the world. The relationship between hypertension (HTN) and chronic kidney disease (CKD) is cyclic in nature.

Assess the level of knowledge and practice for prevention of hypertensive renal diseases among patients with hypertension, evaluate the effect of video assisted teaching on knowledge and practice for prevention of hypertensive renal diseases among patients with hypertension, associate the pre-test knowledge and practice of the patients with hypertension for the prevention of hypertensive renal diseases with selected sociodemographic and clinical data variables, correlate the post-test knowledge and practice of the patients with hypertension for the prevention of hypertensive renal diseases.

Pre-experimental one group pre-test post-test design was used. Data were collected from 30 samples by convenient non-probability sampling technique using self-developed structured knowledge questionnaire and self-developed practice checklist followed by administration of video assisted teaching. Post-test was done on 6th day.

Most of the samples 13 (43.3%) belonged to the age group of 61-70 and 17(56.7%) were females. Among the samples 21(70%) were taking regular treatment for hypertension. Almost 22(73.3%) samples had no family history of hypertension and 3(10%) had family history of renal diseases. Paired t-test showed a highly significant (p<0.01) difference in the pre-test and post-test knowledge and practice scores regarding prevention of hypertensive renal diseases. The pre-test and post-test knowledge scores on prevention of hypertensive renal diseases were 9.40±3.719 and 22.23±1.104 respectively (p<0.01). The pre-test and post-test practice scores on prevention of hypertensive renal diseases were 6.93±1.048 and 10.30±0.750 respectively (p<0.01).

Video assisted teaching was effective in improving level of knowledge and practice in prevention of hypertensive renal diseases among patients with hypertension.
