Abstract

First lactation daily milk yield records from 1981–91 of 415 Murrah buffaloes were utilized to predict 305 day milk yield based on test day yields. Eight test day yield were drawn under monthly stratified random sampling. Ratio factors were developed using one to eight test day yields (both morning and evening milk yield) to predict 305 day milk yield and errors in estimation and accuracy was worked out in terms of R2(%). The accuracy in the prediction increased substantially only upto four test day yields thereafter increase in accuracy was negligible. Four test day yields taken from 2nd, 4th, 6th and 8th month of lactation predicted first lactation 305 day lactation milk yield with 89% accuracy (R2) in Murrah buffaloes.
