The effect of heat stress on morning and evening rectal temperature and respiration rates in 34 HF crossbred cows under various heat ameliorating measures under farm conditions of Tarai region were studied. It was found that water showering during peak hot hours of the day (11.00–16.00 Hrs) helped in significantly dissipating heat load as evident by lowering of evening rectal temperature and respiration rates. Feeding of sodium bicarbonate @ 1.2% of concentrate allowance did not significantly ameliorate the heat stress. Besides lowering the upper limits of ambient temperature and RH, it was also found beneficial to lower minimum limits of ambient temperature and RH for the comfort of the animals.
