Abstract

A study was undertaken for evaluation of egg quality traits in Kadaknath (K) x Brown Cornish (BC), Aseel (A) x BC, A x Rhode Island Red (RIR) and K x RIR crossbred chickens under backyard poultry rearing in six villages of Udham Singh Nagar district in Tarai areas of Uttaranchal. All the egg quality traits viz., egg weight, shell weight, shell thickness, shape index, albumen volume, albumen weight, albumen index, Haugh unit, yolk volume, yolk weight and yolk index statistically differed significantly among crossbred groups, except shape index. The A x RIR crossbred was superior to other crossbreds in albumen index (0.079), Haugh unit (70.22), egg weight (56.27g) and yolk index (0.425). Results indicated that the eggs obtained from A x RIR crossbred had better egg quality as compared to other three crossbreds, reared under backyard system.
